 Steamed rice dumplings. It was Dumpling Festival yesterday. Some call it Dragon Boat Festival. In Mandarin, it's called Duan Wu Jie (端午节). It's the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar, a day of commemorating the Chinese patriot and poet, Qu Yuan (屈原) who killed himself by jumping into the river to show his disappointment to the downfall of the Chu Dynasty he loyally supported during the Zhan Guo 战国 (Warring States) period. Traditionally, people would throw zong zi (粽子) or rice dumplings into rivers in hopes that the fish in the river would feed on these dumplings instead of the body of the fallen idol. These dumplings are usually consisting of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves stuffed with meat, beans, chestnuts, salted egg yolks and mushrooms. ( Read further )
